I’ll admit it, I never used to think much about where my coffee came from. Like a lot of people, I grabbed a cup every morning because it helped my brain wake up and start my day.
The more I learned about Fair Trade coffee, though, the more I realized there’s a whole story behind every cup.
Someone planted those coffee trees. Someone cared for them. Someone harvested the coffee that eventually made its way into my cup. For coffee farmers around the world, coffee isn’t just something we drink, it’s their livelihood.
Why Fair Trade Coffee Matters
Fair Trade is about creating a fairer system for the farmers and workers behind the products we use every day. That includes working toward fair wages and incomes, stronger trading relationships, and helping farmers deal with economic and environmental challenges.
To me, that’s what makes Fair Trade different. It’s not just about buying coffee. It’s about thinking about the people who made that morning cup possible.

It’s About More Than Coffee
One thing I didn’t realize before starting this project was how much bigger the Fair Trade conversation is than coffee alone.
It connects to how farmers earn a living, how communities can grow and create more opportunities, and how sustainable farming can help farmers prepare for challenges in the future. Fairtrade International’s 2025 Annual Report discusses its continued work toward living incomes and helping producers become more resilient while working with nearly 2 million farmers and workers around the world (Fairtrade International, 2026).

That’s a pretty amazing connection to something many of us buy every week without giving it much thought.
Every Cup Counts
We can’t fix every challenge facing coffee farmers overnight, but we can be a little more intentional about the choices we make every day.
Choosing Fair Trade coffee might seem like a small thing, but even learning where our coffee comes from can help us better understand the people and communities behind it.
That’s exactly why I created Brewing Change. My goal isn’t to tell people what they should buy or make anyone feel guilty about their choices. I simply want to share what I’ve learned so others can decide for themselves.
The next time you pour your morning coffee, take a second to think about where it came from. Knowing the story behind that cup might just change the way you see it.
